Services to Enhance Potential won’t be celebrating Governor Granholm’s proclamation of this week as Community Rehabilitation Organization Week by taking time off. Its staff will be helping people with significant developmental disabilities find jobs.

“We offer employers great flexibility, whether they need one person or an entire crew,” said James E. Grice, President and CEO of the Wayne County rehabilitation organization. “We can provide transportation to the work place and training and supervision.”

“The employers we work with are often surprised to discover how capable our workers are. Our staff knows that each person has unique talents and abilities, but the larger society often sees only the disability – not the whole person,” he said.

Services To Enhance Potential currently has more than 160 people placed in assembly, childcare, clerical, food service, inspection, janitorial, packaging, recycling, and warehouse positions in organizations that include grocery stores, restaurant chains, national retailers, large retirement communities, industrial settings, governmental agencies, nonprofit organizations and small businesses.

“There are several reasons this works well for so many employers. Most important is the attitude of the workers we provide. They are eager to be part of the workforce. Almost as important is that our staff has so much knowledge about and commitment to structuring work situations to meet employers’ needs and help the persons we serve be successful. Everybody wins,” Grice said.

Some individuals work independently after an initial training period. Others may work in group settings with fulltime supervision provided by a Services to Enhance Potential staff member.

Services to Enhance Potential currently serves more than 1,000 people throughout Wayne County. The organization has facilities in Detroit, Dearborn, Livonia, Wayne and Wyandotte. For further information about the organization and its services, call 313.278.3040.
