STEP EMPLOYEES AMONG THOSE HONORED BY THE ARC DETROIT
May 21, 2004
The Arc Detroit conducted its 53rd Annual Dinner and Legacy Award
Program at the Sacred Heart Seminary this evening in spite of the
stormy weather which flooded many highways and cut power to thousands
of homes and businesses. Services To Enhance Potential was well
represented among the distinguished awardees who received much deserved
recognition for their efforts and accomplishments on behalf of persons
with disabilities.
Joyce Bridgeforth , Quality Assurance Director, was awarded the
honor of Professional of the Year. Joyce has served in the mental
heath field for over 40 years in various roles including Occupational
Therapist, Special Education Teacher, Counselor, Medicaid Review
Specialist, and Recipient Rights Advisor. She has been involved
in projects too numerous to mention and faced every challenge, however
large, with her organizational skills, energy, and ability to work
with others.
Pat
Houlihan, Regional Director for the Detroit and Eastern Resource
Centers , was given the distinguished Joseph Ptaszynski Volunteer
of the Year Award. Pat has endeared himself to hundreds of people
over the years with his easygoing style and involvement in countless
activities and projects which includes as an Arc Detroit board member,
projects including Special Olympics, Hancock Happenings, and the
Advocates Rights Council; over 20 years with the Wayne County Regional
Interagency Coordinating Committee; over 20 years on the board of
Directors for the Homes of Opportunity; and numerous after hours
programs for STEP.
Ed Darmanin, Manager of the Farmer Jack store on Livernois near
Seven Mile, was on hand to receive the Employer of the Year Award.
Nominated by STEP, Farmer Jack has earned this recognition for its
efforts to provide employment in an inclusive environment that promotes
a sense of community and camaraderie amongst its employees. One
of our consumers has been employed at this store for over 15 years!
He attends all of the Christmas and birthday parties and New Year's
Eve celebrations. If there is a death in the family of one of his
co-workers, he is always included, even given a ride to the services.
Congratulations to Joyce Bridgeforth Pat Houlihan, and Farmer
Jack for a job well done and to the Arc Detroit for their tireless,
grassroots efforts to improve the lives of persons with disabilities!
