Thrill of a Lifetime for Guy Marching in the Parade!

November 22, 2004

It’s not every day you are asked to be part of a national event that is seen by millions of people, but for one local Westland resident it is truly a thrill of a lifetime.

“I actually got goose bumps when they asked me to be in the parade!” said David White. “We are dressing as clowns and walking down the parade route. This will be a great Thanksgiving! I am just so thankful for being in the parade, for my family and for my new baby cousin who was just born.”

David, along with three other guys, have been volunteering at The Parade Company since this past spring. The gentlemen, all with developmental disabilities, are part of a program with Services To Enhance Potential, a non-profit organization that finds opportunities to help folks find meaningful relationships in their communities. STEP is a provider to Community Living Services, Inc. which is a non-profit that provides supports and services to people with disabilities.

David and his friends volunteer twice a week at The Parade Company and they have seen the transformation from drawings on paper to life-size floats.

My friends are jealous of me when I tell them that I get to volunteer down here, they don’t believe me when I tell them about all of the floats and how big and beautiful they are, they want to come with me and volunteer.”

The partnership with STEP and The Parade Company began just this year but everyone involved is hoping it will last for a very long time.

Our organization met with The Parade Company volunteer coordinator earlier this year and said it would be great for us to work together, so here we are,” said Michael Buhl, STEP Employment Representative.

David say he doesn’t mind if it snows during the Parade because he will be wearing lots of layers of clothing and is so happy to be a part of the huge event that the cold weather won’t even be a concern for him.

Community Living Services is a non-profit organization that promotes inclusion, full citizenship and a self determined life for people with developmental disabilities. CLS is approved by the Detroit-Wayne County Mental Health Agency to be both a Manager of a Comprehensive Provider Network (MCPN) as well as a Support Service Network. CLS is also a provider of services to the Oakland County Community Mental Health Authority.
